JOB DUTIES: The key role of an Engineering Specialist-Performance/Simulation/Application is that of an experienced individual contributor to projects or assignments that are sufficiently large and complex as to often be shared with one or two other engineers and/or technologists. This position will be accountable for identification, analysis and resolution of needs and problems in discipline for which the incumbent is gaining a reputation as an expert. In addition to demonstrating technical expertise, a person in this position may be called on to act as a team and/or project leader. But major focus is on technical delivery. Direct work with other units, suppliers, customers, dealers and teams require the incumbent demonstrate skill in negotiation, building consensus and achieving compromise. Impact of decisions made by this position may be far-reaching, to include the project team or immediate work group, division and/or business unit, suppliers, internal and external customers, and Caterpillar markets. Decisions may significantly impact: product performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability; warranty; total cost of non-quality; patents; products or processes; technology; costs; sales; and customer perceptions, as well as how technology is applied.
Success factors for the Engineering Specialist-Performance/Simulation/Application are strong communication skills, an understanding of customers’ and business needs (VOC and VOB) and product and process application, and ability to manage priorities. Major challenges facing incumbents are keeping up-to-date with technology, developing increased technical breadth and/or depth of one’s own specialty, being very innovative yet able to convert concepts to reality, beginning to think strategically, and paying attention to business needs and trade off’s. Responsibilities of this position demand that the incumbent understand complex technical problems and demonstrate the ability to develop creative solutions. Technical leadership skills are essential. Though the focus of the job is technical contribution, project management skills may be required.
Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: develop, evaluate, and deploy new Virtual Product Development (VPD) processes, tools, and technologies for performance simulations and analysis; establish technical requirements and specifications for new products using VPD simulations and analysis; engage with internal and external partners to gain acceptance for key requirements and specifications; perform concept feasibility analysis to evaluate key components, sub-system, and system technology options and trade-off’s; develop overall performance acceptance criteria for product; use latest VPD and simulations tools to evaluate different concepts and recommend prime path; support team leader and manager with VPD results for decision making; improve current product quality using data and analysis results comparisons.
The Engineering Specialist-Performance/Simulation/Application must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. This position must develop increased technical breadth and/or depth at this level, as well as gaining increased business management skills. Additional key skills at this level include development of acceptance criteria, new product introduction process, practical application of theory, ability to select appropriate tools and methodologies, manufacturing and quality processes and communication skills.
