The Automation Project Team Leader role in Caterpillar’s Excavation Division (EXD) is a combination of technical team leadership and individual contribution that will help the team focus on the development, integration of safety and productivity systems by defining, prioritizing, and communicating requirements and assigning work efforts. Prioritization efforts will require good knowledge of the trade-offs between time, resources and quality. The Automation Project Team Leader will be the first point of contact for team members and also work with other teams to help remove roadblocks for issues that cross multiple organizations.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:  

  • Lead development and completion of hydraulic excavator automation projects.
  • Gather requirements from external and internal customers, process partners, and regulatory teams.
  • Create and manage detailed design documentation (system, hardware, software)
  • Drive hardware and software design requirements through the development, implementation, and validation process.
  • Support system level NPI activities (engineering, marketing, supply chain, etc.)
  • Travel to Caterpillar proving grounds or customer sites when needed
  • Maintain technology alignment across the EXD product line 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering or Computer Science. 
  • 5 or more years of experience working with embedded systems, sub systems, components or software
  • Must have strong problem-solving skills and analytical skills and the ability to communicate technical information effectively.
  • Must have the ability to identify needed actions and act to resolve issues with minimal oversight
  • Experience with CAN and Ethernet communications protocol development
  • Ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse work group

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Experience working in NPI (New Product Introduction) or DMEDI
  • Experience with Perception Systems including Radar, Cameras, Lidar, Displays, control ECM/ECUs, etc
  • Experience with Collision Avoidance and/or Productivity systems
  • An advanced degree in an Engineering or Computer Science related field
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with very little direction
  • Experience with DFMEA and DVP&R processes and a basic knowledge of electronic system failure modes
  • Experience with Linux, AIS, ROS applications for mobile, earthmoving, agricultural, industrial, or off-highway applications
