Summary

The Engineering Manager 1 – Product Safety & Compliance Manager works in the product regulatory non-emissions compliance risk and product safety area.  This position leads and provides technical direction to a team of product safety consultants within the Product Safety & Compliance section.  These product safety consultants provide deep expertise and consultation to the product group design and technical teams on product regulatory non-emissions standards, regulations, and product safety requirements.  These safety consultants provide expertise throughout product development lifecycles to ensure global market access.

The Engineering Manager 1 – Product Safety & Compliance Manager works in the product regulatory non-emissions compliance risk and product safety area.  This position leads and provides technical direction to a team of product safety consultants within the Product Safety & Compliance section.  These product safety consultants provide deep expertise and consultation to the product group design and technical teams on product regulatory non-emissions standards, regulations, and product safety requirements.  These safety consultants provide expertise throughout product development lifecycles to ensure global market access.

Competencies required in this position include strong knowledge of and experience with Caterpillar product families, an understanding of standards & regulations applicable to Caterpillar products, proven technical leadership ability, and proven ability to influence others on technical topics.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

This position is typically based in the Peoria area and provides leadership and technical direction to a team of product safety consultants within the Product Safety & Compliance section.  These product safety consultants provide deep expertise and consultation to the product group design and technical teams on product regulatory non-emissions standards, regulations, and product safety requirements.  These safety consultants provide expertise throughout product development lifecycles to ensure global market access.

This position will include product safety consultant responsibility for one or more Caterpillar products. 

This position also sets policy, procedures, and strategy in conjunction with other PC&S leadership related to Caterpillar’s global standards and regulations advocacy strategy and compliance documentation. 

Primary accountabilities of this position are to provide the necessary guidance and expertise to the Product Groups on product regulatory/safety and compliance requirements worldwide to allow for appropriate decisions and actions on their product strategies to enable new or continued market access. 

This position may represent Caterpillar in areas related to product regulatory non-emissions technical standards and regulations development and revision consistent with our global advocacy strategy

The ability to draw upon foundational product development skills such as conceptual design, development of product and/or process, data analysis & extraction, failure resolution & prevention, and requirements management is required

The ability to draw upon knowledge of more than one engineering function, technology, component, system, product, or process is required as is the need to have a breadth of knowledge and experience including products, processes, product design and validation

This role requires increasing understanding of the Caterpillar overall O&E business model, the business aspects of technology, and the customers’ business and needs.

This position needs to be an excellent communicator, influencer, and strategic thinker -- excellent human relations, interpersonal, and communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive issues, develop, mentor and coach and/or persuade others on new technologies, new applications, or potential solutions.  

This position needs to keep abreast of new and emerging trends in product technology

This position requires a long-range focus on business strategy, resource planning, developing and supporting compliance processes, tools, and technologies

This role is critical to establishing a culture and workplace environment that encourages innovation, partnering and collaborative relationships with product groups and business partners, and an internal client and external customer focus

This role is accountable for protecting Caterpillar’s intellectual property by properly classifying and restricting access to Caterpillar technical information related to their area of responsibility.

Basic Qualifications

Accredited Engineering degree or a closely related technical degree with 15 or more years of experience in product development

3 years of prior supervisory experience

Top Candidates will also have

Advanced technical or business degree

Prior 6 Sigma Experience

Strong technical knowledge of Caterpillar machinery prime products and components

Working knowledge and experience with product regulatory related industry standards and regulations applicable to Caterpillar’s products

Proven verbal and written communication skills, strong planning and organizing skills, proven influencing and negotiating skills (to defend Cat’s position on technical issues with regulators and peers), high initiative, and demonstrated ability to take an enterprise view

Understand and apply the principles of Caterpillar’s Our Values In Action and Code of Worldwide Business Conduct

The location for this position is Peoria, IL

Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position

This position may require less than 10% travel
